Like many in my profession, I cut my creative teeth with pen, pencil and paper before moving with the times and getting to grips with modern technology.

Having become dissatisfied with my lot as a music journalist in 2002, I built my first web site as a front end for my music reviews.  Through my passion for music I then became involved with making web sites for some of the musicians that I was writing about on my own music ezine web site.  A rather simple twist of fate means that I now have a defunct music web site, and an ever-increasing portfolio of music-related web sites.

Although my older portfolio reflects my interest in the music industry, I am more than happy to consider all manner of commissions and contract work, from all creative, business and community sectors.

Indeed, I already have a number of general interest web sites under my care, as diverse as hair salon and personal trainer web sites.

Like many artists and craftsmen, I followed the trend of basing my studio at home (in Plymouth, Devon), where I am able to adapt my working day to suit the needs of my clients (mainly due to the different geographical time zones that I need to work across).  My little home-based web design studio belies its definition - I can offer big studio attention to detail, whilst retaining the individual attention to clients needs that can only come from a small personalised business.  I strive to provide an artistic and creative approach to the personal service I provide, based around individually tailored solutions to web design requirements.

In the ever-changing world of web design I continually strive to learn new techniques, in order that I might offer my clients the best service that I can.

Nearly all of my clients come to me through referrals from existing clients, many of whom I am now privileged to be able to call friends.

Things I like: Tate Gallery, St Ives (Cornwall), Pork & Leek Sausages, Duffs, Galaxy Minstrels, down duvets & pillows, Ferrero Pocket Coffee, Les Claypool, 3-legged dogs, Blossom Hill, art house and foreign movies, Dirty Three, Tex Perkins, Zippo, Palmers Cocoa Butter, Gutter Twins, Ruarri Joseph, Alabama 3, The Cruel Sea, Yuccas, The Sunday Times (especially the Culture supplement), Beasts of Bourbon, Tamas Wells,Eden Project, Xavier Rudd, Jason Isbell, Drive-by Truckers, Mark Lanegan .....

This particular Little Fish manages a portfolio of over 200 web sites, many of them my own creations, although I now maintain an extensive portfolio of web sites built by other web designers as well.

Sadly, some of my previous clients have moved on to different things and no longer have a web site, but I am happy to provide screen shots or a working demo of any old web sites that are no longer online.

Below is a small selection of some of my own most recent projects.

One Little Fish generally utilises Wordpress or Joomla! for your CMS needs, and for your eCommerce presence on the internet, OSCommerce and Magento, with the option of Virtuemart if integrated with a CMS such as Joomla!
  • + Web hosting solutions

I can also provide Operating System and software installation in the Plymouth geographical area and one-to-one web tuition anywhere in the UK (conditions apply) - this tuition service is aimed mainly at those who wish to maintain their own web site in the long term, and require a basic grounding in web design theory and practices, or tuition for using specific software.

How I work

I look at your brand, what it means now in the eyes of your target audience, and what you want it to mean in the future. Then I focus on creating a visual translation of your brand across your web site. I do this by giving some love to the flow and tone of the web site and introducing the right typography, color palette ..... aesthetics can make or break a web site.

I focus on designing with web standards in mind, using XHTML and CSS (well, unless it's a Flash web site, of course!). This method of design translates into better search engine ranking, reduced development and site update time, and increased accessibility. This will allow your web site to reach more people now, and in the future of the progressively evolving Internet.

In an effort to encourage internet users to use modern web browsers (making their internet activities more visually pleasing and, of course more safe and secure), One Little Fish now develops web sites primarily for the latest versions of: Firefox (version 2/3), Internet Explorer (version 7 and 8 (version 8 still in Beta stage) and Safari. With recent Beta release of the Google Chrome web browser, One Little Fish also endevours to produce web sites that render correctly in Google Chrome as well.

I really do want you to like your new site. And I also want to be able to point at it and say, "Yes, I did that one!"

What will it cost

Strewth, that all sounds very geeky, so probably expensive?!? What on earth will this web site I want cost me?

As every web site is completely different and costs vary, we'll look at what you want - and then work out what you actually need, and make sure it's within your budget, of course.

Like most people, I have an underused blog, where one could (if they were that way inclined) find a
miscellaneous collection of late night rants, raves and egocentric missives.

My blog is a rather irregular affair, where I might, at some point, dispense my uninvited views on anything from music to web design, my love of plastic storage boxes, or, indeed, any other useless crap that might occur to me; or maybe about nothing at all - something I'm very good at.

Monologists rule .....

Monologists who are also web designers often have a blog that isn't ready yet.

As is the case with mine.

Eh? Oooh, I'd say another week or so .....
